His eyes crinkled and she shivered in response.

Excitement bubbled in her belly as she realized how much she wanted him to kiss her. She leaned toward him, tilting her head, and realized he was doing likewise. Goose bumps rose on her skin.

She parted her lips a little, skimmed her tongue around to moisten them. She might have excused the movement to any onlooker as instinctive but could not pretend to herself this was anything other than deliberate. Gui’s scarred lips twitched into a smile, causing a deep half-moon to appear at the corner of his mouth. Aelfhild’s fingers itched to touch it. Would it be hard against her lips or as soft as the rest of his lips promised to be?

Gui inclined his head, tilting it a little to the left and drawing closer still until his face filled Aelfhild’s vision. He gazed at her with such open desire Aelfhild was incapable of thought. Her mind emptied of every desire other than the urgent need to feel his lips on hers. She raised herself onto her toes, leaning closer and closing her eyes in anticipation.
